Every so often a competition result lands on my desk and I find myself smiling before I have even finished reading it. That happened this week with the news out of Ohio, where Piano Cleveland has announced the finalists of its 2026 Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. As a pianist who has lived through the nerves and the wonder of the competition circuit, I always read these lists as more than names. Each one is a young musician who has just had one of the biggest weeks of their life so far.

Who made the final round

The six finalists come from four countries, a nice reminder of how genuinely international this young-artist world has become.

In the Junior Division, the finalists are The Senior Division finalists are

There is a third strand too. The idea of an eleven-year-old already fielding this kind of pressure is both dizzying and rather moving.

A format built for real musicianship

What I like about Cleveland's model is that it refuses to treat young players as miniature machines. Chamber playing at this age teaches listening, flexibility and give-and-take, the very things that separate a soloist from a musician.

The road here was long. From that global pool,

The final challenge

The finalists faced a genuinely unusual finish. And this is the part that would have thrilled me at their age: To stand in front of an orchestra as a teenager, then have one of the great pianists of our time shape your playing in public, is an education money cannot buy.

Why these stories matter

Cleveland has a track record of spotting talent early. It is worth remembering that these launching pads are how many concert careers quietly begin, long before the big prizes and the international tours.

Watching young players find their voice is close to my heart. So much of my own concert life now lives in the space between solo recital and chamber music, where the real conversation happens. If you enjoy following the artists of tomorrow, I would warmly invite you to explore my upcoming concerts and recital programmes at yinghopiano.com, or to get in touch about booking a performance. The joy of the keyboard is best shared in a room together.

To the six finalists in Cleveland: whatever the ranking, you have already done the hard part. Keep listening, keep playing, and let the music breathe.
